EDUCATION ASSISTANT’S UNIT UPDATE Firstly; EAs now have their own link set up on our CUPE website, thanks to our in-house webmaster, Tad Marcak. As well as the regular staff, this will enable our Casual and Temp EAs to have better access to information concerning the goings-on, such as workshops, resources, etc in the Delta School District. You can also contribute by emailing Tad on his school site. Get involved!!! Check it out!!! Log on to www.cupelocal1091.com Secondly; our EA survey has acted as a catalyst to an EA survey province wide. CUPE BC is requesting that we go on line and redo it, so they have accurate data provincially, to present on our behalf. We had a 93% response the first time -- let's do the same or better. Remember DATA is POWERFUL when it comes to negotiations, and with budget cuts. we're going to have to show proof of our value within this education system. NOTE: This must be completed by May 31st by going to our local website. Now some FYI - Did You Know??? If your annual income is $35,000.00 or less, you rent, and have a dependant under the age of 18 living at home, you may want to log on to www.bchousing.org and check out Rental Assistance Program or call 604-433-2218 at Housing Inquiry for info on a potential entitlement to a subsidy. A 6 hour employee is entitled to a half hour unpaid lunch break and 2 paid fifteen minute rest (coffee) breaks. If you work extra time above your assigned hours, you're entitled to bank that extra time on your time sheet. That way it gets documented at the board level. This has 2 benefits. If you change schools you still get to use it not lose it. If it is recognized at board level, it reinforces that that quite often, the hours assigned are not adequate. This includes things such as losing your lunch time and coffee breaks while on field trips - even though you're eating with the students, waiting for late buses, staying because of a child’s physical needs or being delayed by parent’s and teacher’s inquiries, just to mention a few. This time is to be pre-approved by a principal whenever possible, such as on field trips, but it is not always foreseen. Stick to your rights, put the minutes on your time sheet. For every minute you work for free you're denying your own family. Most administrators understand the diversity of our jobs, however if they don't, it is our responsibility to help educate them. Empowering them helps empower us as professionals. Speaking of field trips - if you're outside with your students, don't forget you can get sunscreen because the sun is now a work hazard. submitted by Faye McCroary, EA Chairperson |
